The total number above does not include Australiaโ€™s proposed intake of 13,750 permanent residence visas for its Refugee and Humanitarian Program, which is separate to the Migration Program above.

The 2020-2021 Migration Program intends to:

  • Improve the productive capacity of the economy and fill skill shortages in the labour market, including those in regional Australia under the skill stream;
  • Enable Australians to reunite with family members from overseas, and provide them with pathways to citizenship where they may be able to apply under the family stream;
  • Consider permanent residents returning to Australia after a period away under the special eligibility stream; and
  • Provide at least 3,000 places for eligible children to apply for visas to remain in Australia.
