Berwick Church of Christ

“I’ve enjoyed working with them all, and I haven’t found anyone who hasn’t been helpful or willing to help very quickly. I’m never waiting for days. It’s always very quick. I can ring or I can set up the zoom meeting, anything at any time. There is never an issue with getting what I need when I need it.”

Berwick Church of Christ

BACKGROUND

Berwick Church of Christ, a longstanding institution with over 150 years of history, has evolved into a cornerstone of the community with a significant impact on the lives of its members. The church, now situated on a sprawling 14-acre property in Victoria, started humbly but expanded three times to accommodate its growth. With a strong focus on community service, Berwick Church of Christ engages in various initiatives, including operating a food bank, hosting mental health support groups, and organising youth programs. The church sustains itself through the support of its 1500 regular attendees and an additional 1000 affiliated members who contribute to its funding without relying on government assistance.

In terms of internal operations, Berwick Church of Christ boasts a dedicated team comprising over 300 volunteers and approximately 13 employed staff. The church’s commitment to efficiency is evident as it provides a platform for staff members to seek answers through a central hub, Human Resources and Compliance (HRC), streamlining processes and fostering a collaborative work environment.

SOLUTION

Berwick Church of Christ faced challenges, particularly in the realm of workplace health and safety (WHS) and human resources. The complexity of understanding what was essential and required for WHS, coupled with the intricacies of policy development, created a daunting task for the church. The uncertainty surrounding what policies were necessary and the fear of overlooking critical gaps added to their concerns. The dynamic nature of legal frameworks further intensified the challenges, as laws governing contracts were undergoing changes, particularly regarding the termination of contracts. With the Executive Pastor overseeing most HR-related matters and managing contracts, the team grappled with adapting to these legal shifts, leading to a heightened sense of uncertainty and the need for guidance.

In their pursuit of solutions, Berwick Church of Christ found a supportive ally with HR Connect, who demonstrated a genuine understanding of the church’s unique needs. The initial Zoom meeting left a positive impression, as the HR Connect team had thoroughly researched the church and presented information in a clear and manageable step-by-step process. The trust instilled from the beginning allowed the team to lean on the HR Connect’s team’s expertise, providing them with a reliable source for navigating the plethora of information available. This collaboration instilled a sense of confidence and assurance, with the team feeling supported and understood as they tackled the challenges in managing their organisational policies and compliance.

RESULT

The implementation of Employment Innovations’ HR Connect and WHS services has yielded incredible results for Berwick Church of Christ, particularly in the realm of health and safety system management. The church is currently undergoing the enhancement of their health and safety processes and demonstrating a proactive approach to compliance and employee well-being. With the support of these services, the church’s leadership has experienced a profound sense of peace, knowing they don’t need to have all the answers independently. Instead, they have a reliable source to rely on, providing a clear starting point and a structured roadmap for their businesses needs. The removal of uncertainty and the introduction of a solid framework for HR and WHS have increased the security of their actions, fostering a greater sense of certainty and compliance.

The impact on contract management has been particularly noteworthy. The previous uncertainty regarding whether employees fell under specific Awards has been clarified, offering full clarity on entitlements and benefits. This newfound clarity has allowed the church to customise contracts, adding benefits to those who were not covered under Awards, and ensuring fairness among staff. The result is a workplace where everyone feels a sense of fairness, with tailored contracts for different roles, fostering a culture of equity and employee satisfaction.
